Employment Opportunity

Silver Lake Wesleyan Camp is seeking an individual to fill the position of Camp Manager.  He or she would be responsible to provide management oversight for the activities that take place at the camp.  This position is available effective April 1, 2008, with our preference to fill the position no later than the end of May 2008.

Silver Lake Wesleyan Camp is situated 1-hour southwest of Ottawa, Ontario.  Our 55 acres, about ½ of which are developed, provide an excellent retreat from city life.  To that end, we provide a place that many groups take advantage of as they respond to the call to make Disciples of Christ.  We currently support ministry in the following three areas:

  • 7 summer camps - Music, Family, 3 children’s, Junior High, and Teen;
  • 12 to 15 retreats of varying size throughout the year; and
  • Ministry to the 50+ cottage and trailer owners who lease property from the camp.

Of note, the annual District Conference for the Central Canada District of the Wesleyan Church is held on the campgrounds in July.

The successful candidate, a Christ follower, would be expected to commit to be in harmony with the Articles of Religion and Membership Commitments of The Wesleyan Church, and would be expected to give evidence of or demonstrate the following abilities and character.

Abilities

§         Strong Planning, Organizing, and Monitoring skills;

§         Ability to provide strong team leadership to committees through which much of the work at the camp is completed (Maintenance, Kitchen & Hospitality, Camp Ministry, Finance and Administration and Promotion);

§         Effective Property Management skills to provide oversight on a significant portfolio of aging camp buildings and infrastructure (Motel, Tabernacle, Dining Hall, 2 dormitories, 8 cabins and 3 all season houses and other incidental buildings);

§         An understanding of volunteer organizations, promotion, and an ability to network within the Central Canada District of the Wesleyan Church (40+ churches,) and beyond;

§         A client service orientation; and

§         Ability to build into others – i.e.  In the context of work, provide spiritual guidance to and oversee skills development of the approximately 10 summer students hired during the camping season.

Character

§         Judgement, tact, decisive, flexible, capacity to handle stress

Previous involvement in Ministry with children and or teens, experience in the service industry, and / or experience with a volunteer organization would be an asset.  For your information:

§         The position of manager is currently for 8 months employment annually (April to November), although the Board would like to see this term lengthen in the future;

§         Salary is negotiable, full benefits package included;

§         We are asking for a minimum 3 year commitment; and

§         Year round lodging is available on-site.

The Board sees our Camp Manager not so much in a caretaker role, but rather in a builder role.  We would like to work alongside an individual who has a vision and calling for camping ministries, and brings with him / her creativity and insight to take new paths for the sake of the Kingdom!
